Prep roundup: Kaneland runner finishes in top 10 at invite

AURORA – Kaneland’s Kyle Carter led the Knights at the Charger Classic Invitational by finishing sixth Saturday in a time of 14 minutes, 57 seconds on the 2.9-mile course. Carter became the first Kaneland runner to break the 15-minute mark on the flat, fast course at Oakhurst Park.

“We had a very encouraging and fortunate day,” Kaneland coach Chad Clarey said. “Encouraging to see our pack split 1 to 6 of just 65 seconds. Fortunate that none of our runners [were] seriously injured.”

Senior Conor Johnson (15:15), senior John Meisenger (15:46), junior Ryan Bower (16:00) and senior Brandon Huber (16:02) also scored for the Knights, who took sixth as a team in the 29-team invitational.

Johnson recovered from a pile-up of runners in the opening 150 meters, getting kicked and spiked in the chest but persevering to finish as the Knights’ second runner.

Stice leads Sycamore: Mark Stice led Sycamore to a fourth-place finish at the Rock River Run at Hoover Park in Sterling. Stice took fourth individually, completing the three-mile course in 16 minutes, 5 seconds. David Emmert finished 11th with a time of 16:14 and Adam Millburg was 14th in 16:18.

Cogs ninth at Winnebago: Genoa-Kingston finished in ninth place at the Winnebago Invitational at Fuller Forest Preserve.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Knights second, Spartans fourth: Kaneland sophomore Victoria Clinton won the varsity race  at the Rock River Run in Sterling in 17:44, helping the Knights to a second-place finish behind Geneva. Brianna Bower took 10th while Sydney Strang finished in 15th.

Sycamore finished fourth. The Spartans were led by Maggie Lalowski (8th, 18:57) and Morgan Morreale (12th, 19:18).

Cogs seventh at Winnebago: Genoa-Kingston finished in seventh place at the Winnebago Invitational at Fuller Forest Preserve.

BOYS GOLF

Barbs take 10th: DeKalb boys golf took 10th place at the Sterling Invitational, finishing with team stroke count of 361. Jake Cook (87), Connor Hoyle (86), Ben Melms (94) and Hunter Tiggelaar (94) all scored for the Barbs.

BOYS SOCCER

Cogs roll: Genoa-Kingston scored three second-half goals to beat Plano, 3-0. Uriel Ortega, Cris Camargo and Devon Tijerina each scored for G-K and the Cogs improved to 10-4, including 4-3 in the Big Northern Conference East Division.

Barbs play to scoreless draw: The windy conditions proved too much as Huntley and DeKalb played to a scoreless draw. Austen Emery recorded three saves for Huntley (10-3-1) in the nonconference game.

T'Wolves lose: St. Edward defeated Indian Creek 2-0.


LATE FRIDAY

Royals pull out late win: Billy Weissinger's goal with 33 seconds left in the game lifted Hinckley-Big Rock (12-2, 4-1) to the 3-2 win over Earlville-Leland in boys soccer. It was Weissinger's second goal of the game. Bernie Conley added a goal and had an assist.

Timberwolves fall to Keith: Keith defeated Indian Creek 25-13, 25-1 in volleyball. Alyssa Arends had eight digs and four points for the Timberwolves (7-8).
