Laborers' Local Union 393 awards scholarships

During its Aug. 14 monthly union membership meeting, Laborers' Local Union 393 recognized and honored 10 children of their union membership with education scholarships. Those students will attend college this fall.

This year marks the 25th year for Laborers’ Local Union 393 scholarship program. They have given out 219 scholarships to date to any of their members children who graduates from high school and wants to attend college, junior college, university, vocational, trade schools or any other training school. The program was started in 1987 so that every member of Local 393 that has a child whom graduates from high school automatically receives a scholarship to further education and help them achieve their dreams, goals and full potential in life.

Each scholarship recipient is awarded a $400 scholarship check, a framed scholarship certificate and their names engraved on a plaque that hangs in the Laborers’ Union hall at 322 Main St. in Marseilles.

The scholarship was named in honor and legacy of the late Marvin “Bub” Raikes, who was a member of Local 393 for 29 years and served as president of the local for 14 years, always encouraging the membership to send their children for a higher education to better themselves and their life styles.

This years recipients are Blake Dobrich of DePue, the son of Local 393 Union member Ed Ponce; Tyler Dobrich of DePue, the son of Local 393 union member Ed Ponce; Mitchell Kenneth Fox of Sandwich, son of Local 393 Union member Ken Fox; Balie Nicole Grady of Ottawa, the daughter of Local 393 Union member Bob Grady and granddaughter of deceased member Vincent Pauley Gama; Lani Henkel of Streator, the daughter of Local 393 Union member Dale Henkel; Leslie M. Lyons of Ottawa, the daughter of Local 393 Union member Tom Lyons; Breanna Miller of Marseilles, the daughter of Local 393 Union member Brian Miller; Andrew Rowney of Ottawa, the son of Local 393 Union member Michael Rowney; Johnna Allyn Schultz of Spring Valley, the daughter of Local 393 Union member John Schultz; and Sydney Strobel of Ottawa, the daughter of Local 393 Union member Richard Strobel.
