ST. CHARLES – A larger-than-life Colonial Cafe & Ice Cream Kitchen Sink Sundae could travel through a community near you.
The St. Charles-based restaurant this week unveiled a 13.5-foot truck-mounted fiberglass sculpture of its signature dessert. It, along with Colonial’s giant traveling mint chocolate chip ice cream cone sculpture, will be available for community, corporate and parade displays.
Colonial gave the fiberglass company a kitchen sink and pictures of the sundae to work from, Colonial Cafe President Clinton Anderson said. He said the fiberglass sundae, which took more than six months to create, exceeded expectations.
“We’re looking forward to market and advertise what we’re known for,” he said.
Introduced in 1976, the Kitchen Sink has two bananas and two scoops each of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream. It’s topped with chocolate, strawberries, pineapples, whipped cream, chopped almonds and a cherry.
The mobile billboards have about four drivers who get stopped for photographs, Anderson said. Colonial has set up a hash tag, #kitchensinktruck, so people can share photos of the sculpture on social media.
“I have yet to drive the truck around,” Anderson said, “but I’m looking forward to it.”
Colonial Cafe has seven locations throughout the Fox Valley, including two in St. Charles.
