ALTON, Ill. (MCT) — A married couple from the Milton neighborhood is accused of sexually abusing a girl, now 5, at least twice in their home during the past year.
On Wednesday, the Madison County State's Attorney's Office charged Danielle Marie Armstrong, 22, and David Brian Armstrong, 33, of the 3700 block of Coronado Drive, with predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.
Bond was set at $150,000 for each defendant.
Alton police arrested the couple Tuesday afternoon. The Armstrongs remained held Thursday at the Madison County Jail in Edwardsville.
The Class X felony carries a penalty of six to 60 years in state prison, upon conviction.
The charges state the incidents occurred on or about July 1, 2011, through July 8, 2012.
The warrant on Danielle Armstrong says she committed an act of sexual penetration while performing oral sex on the girl.
David Armstrong's warrant says he had the girl place her mouth on his penis.
The charges do not identify the victim or her connection to the couple.
Lt. Scott Golike, chief of detectives at the Alton Police Department, said someone tipped off the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services about the alleged abuse. That report kicked off an investigation involving DCFS, the Madison County Child Advocacy Center and Alton police, he said.
"The investigation led us to believe there were at least two separate events in the past year," Golike said.
The chief detective said such child abuse cases are incomprehensible.
"The behavior is so out-of-bounds," he said.
He said the child is in care of her relatives.
