No suspects yet for grocery store burglary

Police are still searching for the burglar or burglars that robbed an Oregon grocery store on Thanksgiving.

"We have no suspects," Lt. Shawn Melville of the Oregon Police Department said Monday.

Access to the Oregon Super Valu, 204 N. Fourth St., was made through a hole cut in the roof late Nov. 24, sometime after the store closed for the holiday.

Once in the store, the intruder or intruders entered the store office, broke open the safe, and took an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police are still awaiting test results, which they hope will help them determine how the safe was opened, said Melville.

Due to a large amount of debris from the safe, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATFE) was contacted to assist in determining whether any explosives were used to access the safe, police chief Darin DeHaan said last week.

DeHaan said then that he believed sledge hammers were used to smash the safe and open it, rather than explosives.

Melville said the Illinois State Police crime lab is processing evidence taken from the crime scene.

"That could take several weeks," he said.

Illinois State Police assisted the Oregon police at the crime scene.

Computers in the office were also damaged in the break-in.

DeHaan declined to reveal how much money was taken from the safe, but said it was all U.S. currency.

The thief or thieves made entry into the store through the roof sometime between 9 p.m. on Nov. 24 and 4 a.m. on Nov. 25, he said.

The break-in was reported at 5:30 a.m. Nov. 25 by an employee reporting for work.

A local resident observed a subject wearing dark clothes and a ski mask outside the business on Nov. 24 around 9:30 p.m., but did not call police at that time, DeHaan said.

The ski mask was later recovered by an Illinois State Police evidence technician, who was called to process the scene.

Among other evidence recovered was a green standard-issue military duffel bag.
