Farms and Barns exhibit

DIXON – Farms & Barns 7, one of the most popular annual exhibits at The Next Picture Show, runs through Oct. 22 at the gallery, 113 W. First St. The show explores the variety of ways farms and barns and the region's agrarian history inspire and inform artists' work. Chili cook-off in Sterling

STERLING – The United Way of Whiteside County is sponsoring a chili cook-off in the Community State Bank Parking lot and East Lincolnway and Lynn Boulevard. Cooks will be setting up and cooking starting at 7 a.m., the public is invited to taste from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost to enter is $50 per team; cost to taste is $5 per person. Teen Turf fundraiser

AMBOY – A fundraiser for the Teen Turf after-school program will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Green River Saddle Club, 1580 Morman Road. There will be recreational and competitive bags play, a volleyball tournament, a deejay, a 50/50 raffle worth at least $500 to the winner and a silent auction, as well as kids entertainment, such as clowns, a bounce house, face-painting and more. Concessions also will be available. Cost to enter the bags tourney is $20 per two-person team, or $10 per person, for the recreational division, or $40 a team, $20 per person for the competitive division, which offers cash prizes. STERLING – The Lincoln Manahan House, 607 E. Third St., is completely restored and ready for guests. The little brick house where Abraham Lincoln spent the night 155 years ago will be open for free public tours from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The Sterling Rock Falls Historical Society also will open the house by appointment November through April. Regular tours will resume in the summer. Coon Creek farm toy show

PROPHETSTOWN – The Coon Creek Men's Club's 26th annual farm toy show will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Prophetstown High School, 310 W. Riverside Drive. There will be vendors of toys and other collectibles, farm toy displays and exhibits, door prizes and concessions. There also will be a large outdoor exhibit of classic farm tractors and equipment, and of Eclipse lawn mowers, which were made in P-town from 1905 to 1960. New this year is a kids pedal tractor display and parade – all kids are invited to bring their pedals. Admission is $2 for ages 12 and older. Proceeds fund the club's civic improvement projects. Gospel singers in Chadwick

CHADWICK – Hope United Methodist Church's Joash Celebration includes a performance by the Men of Accord, a group from the Pearl City-Lena area that sings a variety of Southern gospel, country, barbershop and oldies. Hike the Hennepin

PRINCETON – Friends of the Hennepin Canal's monthly Hike the Canal outing will begin at  1:30 p.m. at Lock 3, on the northwest side of state Routes 26 and 29. MORRISON – The Big SQUEEZE Committee and the Morrison Community Hospital Foundation present "It's a Mystery" murder mystery dinner and live auction at Prairie Ridge Golf Course. Sauk's annual book sale

DIXON – The Sauk Valley College Foundation's annual used book sale runs from 4 to 9 p.m.  Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Northland Mall in Sterling. In addition to books, there will be books on tape, movies and CDs. Donations of used books will be taken at the school's loading docks until Oct. 17. Chili cook-off and bags 

DIXON – The fourth annual Ultimate Tailgate Cook-off and Bags Tourney, a fundraiser for Dixon Main Street, will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m in the Beanblossom parking lot downtown.
Cooks can enter in three categories: Best Chili, Best Salsa, and, new this year, Best BBQ. There will be cash prizes for first, second and third place, and a People's Choice and a Showmanship award. SVCCA concert

DIXON – Metales M5 features a lot of brass, a lot of music, and a lot of fun by combining fine chamber music with popular entertainment. The concert begins at 7 p.m. at the Historic Dixon Theatre, 114 S. Galena Ave. Admission is by membership to the Sauk Valley Community Concert Association; individual memberships are $40, family memberships are $95. Some tickets might be available. Clinton Symphony Orchestra

CLINTON, Iowa – The Clinton Symphony Orchestra performs at 7:30 p.m. at Clinton High School's Vernon Cook Theater, 817 Eighth Ave. S., and features Moises Molina, professor of cello at Western Illinois University, as soloist in Dvorak's famous cello concerto. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for students. They will go on sale 2 weeks before each concert at Fitzgerald Pharmacy, 124 E.
