North Aurora police officer to be honored at village board meeting

NORTH AURORA – The North Aurora Police Department has announced that one of its officers will be honored Monday at a village board meeting. Officer Michael Quinn will receive the medal of distinguished service, in recognition of action he took at an accident scene in May, according to a news release.

On May 10, at approximately 10:48 p.m., Quinn was dispatched to Randall and Orchard roads for an accident with injuries which involved two passenger vehicles and a motorcycle. Quinn was already in the area, so his response time was quick.

Upon arrival, he observed that a black Ford Focus was on fire. He got out of his squad, grabbed the fire extinguisher from the trunk of his squad car, and ran towards the vehicle that was on fire. He saw the victim was trapped in the vehicle. He attempted to open the driver's side door, but it was jammed. He moved to the passenger's side but that door was jammed, too. He then broke out the passenger window and pulled the victim through the window, according to the release from the police department

Quinn said the victim was resisting his assistance, the release stated. After getting the victim through the window, he moved him safely away from the vehicle which was still on fire. Quinn then ran back to the vehicle and was able to extinguish the fire.

"Officer Quinn's actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of law enforcement and worthy of recognition," Chief David Summer said in the release.

Quinn will be recognized at the meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at village hall, 25 E. State St.. The public is welcome to attend. The award ceremony is the first item on the agenda.
