Batavia City Council appoints city attorney

BATAVIA – The Batavia City Council on Monday appointed a new city attorney after accepting the resignation of longtime city attorney John Noble because of health reasons.

Following a closed session, aldermen approved appointing Batavia-based Drendel & Jansons Law Group as the city’s new legal counsel.

Noble had been city attorney for at least 10 years, Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said. Because of ongoing health problems, Noble told city officials he could no longer continue as city attorney and submitted his resignation.

“Unfortunately, he has had a downturn in his health,” Schielke said.

Schielke also announced that April 7 is the tentative date of the next meeting of the Batavia ACCESS committee.

A brainstorming  session was recently held to get new ideas for the committee, which for the past several years has been primarily overseeing the city’s annual fireworks display as well as a Christmas toy drive.

At the brainstorming session, other projects were suggested that the committee could also get involved in, including making improvements to the Batavia Riverwalk, and the MainStreet Christmas decorating program in the downtown area.

Volunteers built the riverwalk over several years. The riverwalk was completed in 1998.
