DWIGHT, Ill. — Mrs. Bernice A. Sassenger 90, of Dwight, Ill., died at 5:24 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at St. James-John W. Albrecht Medical Center in Pontiac, Ill.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Dwight.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church with an hour of visitation prior to the service. Rev. Daniel Ognoskie and Vicor Jacob Ehrhard will officiate.
Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery in Dwight.
Hager Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements.
Born July 8, 1920, in Gardner, Bernice was the daughter of Henry and Anna Marie Angelika Simantel Ely. She married Ralph Sassenger April 12, 1939. He passed away July 22, 1998.
Survivors include 11 children, Glenda Kutos of Leesburg, Fla., Ralph (Bonnie) Sassenger of Morris, Dennis (Ann) Sassenger of Crossville, Tenn., Gary (Betty Sjostrom) Sassenger of Morris, Debra (Philip) Weller of Dwight, Donna Gebhardt of Emington, Ill., Dorreen Hodgson of Odell, Ill., Keith Sassenger of Pontiac, Ill., Kevin (Julie) Sassenger of Dwight, Rhonda (Mike) Oughton of Channahon and Kimberly (Charles) Sancken of Emington, Ill.; 38 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph; daughters, Judith Kiper, Sheryle Laabs and Dawn Sassenger; sons, Terry and Larry Sassenger; two grandchildren; two brothers; five sisters; two sons in law; and one daughter in law.
Bernice was a homemaker and had worked at William W. Fox Center.
She was a member of the Dwight Emmanuel Lutheran Church, the Mary Marthas and the Dwight VFW Post 2608 Ladies Auxillary.
She devoted her life to her family and loved watching her grandkids in sporting events.
Bernice loved playing bingo, doing crossword puzzles, bowling and she loved her flower garden. She was an avid Alan Jackson fan.
Memorials may be made to Heritage Woods in Dwight, the Dwight Emmanuel Lutheran Church or OSF St. James Hospital in Pontiac.
