Rockford man gets 55 years in attempted murder

ROCKFORD (AP) — A Winnebago County judge has sentenced a 26-year-old Rockford man to 55 years in prison for a July 2008 attempted murder.

Circuit Court Judge Rosemary Collins handed down the sentence Tuesday to Vincent Holmes, who was convicted of attempted first-degree murder in the shooting of Robert White.

Police say Holmes shot White at least two times in the chest and leg, and was located and arrested within two hours.

Several years earlier, Holmes was a key prosecution witness in the murder conviction of William Buck in the August 2001 fatal shooting of off-duty Rockford Police Detective Kevin Rice.

Buck is now serving a 60-year sentence in the Menard Correctional Center.
