Coffee indicted in carjacking, shooting

Charges leveled include attempted murder

A man arrested for attempted murder and aggravated vehicular hijacking was indicted by the Grundy County Circuit Court Grand Jury Wednesday.

Lawrence Coffee, 26, Chicago, was arrested by Minooka police on May 24, after he attempted to hijack one vehicle, shot a woman, then hijacked a second vehicle at the Pilot Travel Center in Minooka.

Coffee was charged with attempted murder for shooting Guadalupe Castellanos in the leg while attempting to hijack her vehicle.

He was indicted for aggravated vehicle hijacking for discharging a gun while taking Castellanos' Dodge Charger.

Coffee was also indicted for aggravated vehicular hijacking for carrying a gun when he took a Chevrolet Trailblazer from Michael Malpede.

After taking the car belonging to Castellanos, Coffee got it hung up on the curb of the drive-through at Arby's. He then fled the station in the SUV owned by Malpede.

Minooka police chased Coffee and arrested him at Buffalo Street.

Grundy County Lt. Mark Smyk testified and Coffee remains in the county jail, unable to post $100,000 cash bond on a $1 million bail.

The grand jury also returned indictments against 22 other defendants Wednesday.

Drug cases

Raymond Fitzgerald, 24, Chicago, was indicted for possession of 15 to 100 grams of heroin and possession of heroin with intent to deliver, a Class X felony.

He was arrested May 19 by Illinois State Police on Interstate 80.

Trooper Ken Gurney testified and Fitzgerald remains in the county jail, unable to post $10,000 cash bond.

John Haynes, 35, Wyoming, Mich., was indicted for possession of more than 5,000 grams of marijuana with intent to deliver, a Class X offense.

He was arrested May 22 by Illinois State Police on Interstate 80.

Trooper Gurney testified and Haynes remains in the county jail, unable to post $7,500 cash bond.

Derek Mesik, 19, 715 Laura Lane, Diamond, was indicted for possession of heroin. He was arrested May 18 by Coal City police.

Coal City Officer Jason Clark testified and Mesik remains in the county jail, unable to post $750 cash bond.

Elmer Peterson Jr., 48, and Karen Peterson, 44, 6135 Blackberry, were indicted for possession of cocaine and possession of heroin.

They were arrested May 13 after a parole officer and Grundy County deputy went to their residence and found heroin and cocaine residue in several bags.

Deputy Kenneth Unland testified. Elmer Peterson posted $3,000 bond and Karen Peterson posted $500 bond.

Lauren Mallory Elder, 25, 1740 Little Willow Road, was indicted for possession of heroin and delivery of between one and 15 grams of heroin. The delivery occurred March 3 to a Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad agent and she was charged in circuit court April 13.

A MANS agent testified and Elswe posted $2,500 bond.

Dale Warren, 43, Rockford, was indicted for possession of more than 100 grams of cocaine, with intent to deliver, a Class X felony, and possession of 30 to 500 grams of marijuana.

He was arrested May 13 at the Morris TA Travel Center by agents from the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad.

A MANS agent testified and Warren remains in the county jail, unable to post $50,000 cash bond.

Thomas Prairie, 22, Marseilles, was indicted for possession of heroin. He was arrested May 6 by Morris police near Division and McKinley streets. Officer Ben Wiechen testified and Prairie was released on $1,000 cash bond.

Justin Francis, 19, was indicted for possession of heroin. He was arrested May 6 on Interstate 80 by Illinois State Police.

Trooper Gurney testified and Francis remains in the county jail in lieu of $500 bond.

Burglary, Theft

Raymond Woods, 22, was indicted on charges of vehicle burglary and aggravated battery. He was charged May 8 with entering a Dodge van owned by Antonio Rivera at Morris Hospital, then kicking Morris Officer Dustin Seale in the face.

Officer Seale testified and Woods remains in the county jail, unable to post $5,000 cash bond.

Daniel Rasor, 24, 34 Aspen, Minooka, was indicted for residential burglary. He was charged May 16 with entering the residence of Edward Blackburn at 29 Aspen, Shady Oaks, and taking a jar of coins.

Det. Rick Onsen testified and Rasor remains in the county jail, unable to post $10,000 cash bond.

Nicholas Findlay, 21, Wilmington, was indicted on two counts of unlawful use of a debit card. He was charged was using the debit card number of Regina Corban at Marketti's Service and Dwight BP, both on Oct. 15.

Grundy County Det. Craig Meece testified.

Sheila Perry, 40, Dolton, was indicted for forgery. She was charged March 11 with delivering a check to Walmart, drawn on the account of All World Staffing, which was not paid by Chase Bank of Antioch. The check was for $507.

Morris Det. Alicia Steffes testified and bond was continued at $500 cash.

Michele Brousek Koehler, 42, was indicted for deceptive practice. She was charged Oct. 27, 2009, with delivering a check for $3,000 to Robert Conley for a lease payment at 537 Johnson Ave. The check, dated Oct. 1, was not paid by Wachovia Bank.

Morris Det. Eric Werden testified and bond was continued at $1,000 cash.

DUI

Scott Carter, 44, West Covina, Calif., was indicted on three counts of felony DUI. All three counts charge that, on May 13, he was driving a Freightliner near Twin Rail Drive and Ridge Road, Minooka, while intoxicated and with a blood alcohol level of more than .04.

Minooka Sgt. Sean Beeler testified and bond was continued at $750 cash.

Patrick Howard, 55, Casey, Ill., was indicted for felony DUI. He was arrested May 16 by Deputy Kenneth Unland after his vehicle went off Gardner Road twice. The charge was upgraded to a felony because of two prior convictions — July 21, 1990, and Nov. 12,1994, both in Christian County.

Deputy Unland testified and bond was continued a $100 and his driver's license.

Revoked licenses

Joseph Lazier, 23, no permanent address, was indicted for felony driving with a revoked license. He was charged April 28 on First Avenue in Morris. The charge was upgraded to a felony because of several priors, including April 24, 2005, and Feb. 15, 2007, in Grundy County.

Sgt. Monty Allbert testified and bond was continued at $100.

Carl Vanderpohl, 22, 1170 Goodfarm Road, was arrested for driving with a revoked license May 15 at Illinois 47 and Interstate 55, Dwight. The charge was upgraded to a felony because of a prior — March 22, 2009, in Livingston County.

Deputy Angelo Sallese testified and bond was continued at $100.

Marvin Valentine, 24, Morris, was arrested for driving with a revoked license May 2 at Brentwood Drive and Newton Place. The charge was upgraded because of three priors — Jan. 27, 2010; Sept. 4, 2006; and Jan. 26, 2007, all in Grundy County.

Officer Dustin Seale testified and bond was continued at $100.

Gerald Reid II, 31, Bourbonnais, was arrested for driving with a suspended license May 9 on U.S. 6 in Morris. The charge was upgraded because of two priors — July 2, 2006, in La Salle County, and July 29, 2007, in Cook County.

Officer Scott Ator testified and bond was continued at $100.

Ryan Bachner, 26, was arrested for driving with a revoked license April 29 by Minooka police at Minooka Road and Ninovan Lane. The charge was upgraded because of priors — July 7, 2005, and Oct. 19, 2007, both in Grundy County.

Robert Awalt, 47, was arrested for driving with a revoked license April 22 by Morris police on Oak Street. The charge was upgraded to a felony because of seven priors, all in Will County.

Officer Charles Newton testified and bond was continued at $100.
