Open for Business: Crescendo Hair

Image 1 of 2

What's new: We recently moved from our North Galena address.

What we offer: We specialize in haircuts, custom colors and massages.

Owner: Matt Appleman, 48, is Dixon born and raised, but lived and worked as a waiter and bartender in Rockford for a while. He has a son, Caleb, 26, of Waukegan, and two rescued greyhounds named Passer and Fancy. He's been in the business since 1989 and attended the Dixon Beauty Academy. His contagious laughter often heard in the hallway at the mall is one way of letting folks know that his business is there, he said.

Founded: This is a stand-alone business that opened 5 years ago while at the Dixon Beauty Academy and then operated on the north side of Galena Avenue before moving to the Mini Mall. Appleman employs one hair stylist and a massage therapist.

Motto: "Take your time and do it right."

We're special: "It's a very small, quaint salon," Appleman said. It has four rooms – one for massage, one for waiting, hair washing and hair styling.
