STERLING – Olivia Arteaga, 58, moved to Sterling 30 years ago from Mexico and started working at Twin City Tortillas.

A year later, she started her own business, using recipes she learned at her mother's side, rolling dough with a table leg.

Today, Arteaga and her six employees make 15,000 to 22,000 tortillas a day at her bakery at 1218 W. Fourth St. in Sterling.

If things go well with the new whole-wheat line, she may have to add three more employees.

Lupita's Tortillas can be found locally at Wal-Mart, Kroger and County Market; she also distributes to HyVee in Davenport, Iowa, and soon will expand to Kroger in Bloomington-Normal.

Lupita's can be reached at 815-625-7829.

Where to buy a bag

Lupita’s new Twin City whole-wheat tortillas will be for sale at Twin City Farmers Market, open from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at 106 Ave. A in Sterling.
