STERLING – Robert Eugene Wittenauer, 72, of Sterling, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, at his home.

Robert was born Sept. 8, 1936, in Amboy, the son of Allen John Wittenauer and Lucille Mallick. He was raised by his mother and stepfather, Clyde Green. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1953 to 1957 on the USS Alshain. He was employed by Northwestern Steel and Wire Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1992. He married Deanna Hood on May 10, 1958, in Kewanee. Robert enjoyed antiques, Nascar, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Deanna of Sterling; his children, Kevin (Linda) Wittenauer of Coal Valley, Kim (Yvonne) Wittenauer of Picayune, Miss., Robin (Daniel) Ramirez of Sterling, and Bobby (Sandi) Wittenauer of Geneseo; two brothers, Joe Wittenauer of Rock Falls and Denny Wittenauer of Alabama; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather; and one sister, Norma Elias.

Cremation rites will be accorded. There will be no services. Arrangements were completed by McDonald Funeral Homes.
