Six charged in connection with stabbing

SYCAMORE – Five men and one juvenile were arrested Wednesday in connection with a stabbing that happened early Monday in the 1200 block of Normal Road.

A Sycamore man, Ernesto T. Rosales, 18, was charged with mob action, attempted first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated battery. His bail was set Thursday at $300,000.

DeKalb men Mariano Hernandez, 19, Orlando Hernandez, 18, Juan O. Roman, 19, and Christopher Diaz, 17, were each charged with mob action and two counts of aggravated battery. Bail was set at $100,000 each. A DeKalb juvenile was charged with the same offenses.

All charges stem from an argument that happened around 2 a.m. Monday in the 900 block of Edgebrook Drive, where police say the victim was chased, beaten and stabbed.

"There was a group of ... males, young males, that got together and was partying and drinking alcohol when an argument ensued," DeKalb Police Chief Bill Feithen said Thursday.

The victim ran from the fight after he was hit.

"... He hid and thought it was safe to continue home ... So he got up and six individuals jumped him," Feithen said.

Court documents indicate the 17-year-old victim said Mariano Hernandez initially struck him in the 900 block of Edgebrook Drive in DeKalb and that he ran away and was pursued by the group.

Both Mariano Hernandez and Diaz admitted to chasing the victim and striking him, according to court documents. Diaz said he was unaware of the stabbing, the documents said. Police noticed blood on the boots of Rosales, who initially denied any involvement in the fight, according to the documents.

He later admitted to stabbing the victim seven times in the back, the documents said, and police believe he was the only person who stabbed the victim, Feithen said.

Police learned of the incident when the victim, who waited about a day to seek medical attention, was admitted to Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb.

"The longer a person waits to report a crime, the more difficult the investigation becomes," Feithen said. "Sometimes 24 hours can be critical."

Hospital staff told police the victim had been stabbed with a knife 22 times, had face and head injuries and a collapsed lung, according to court documents. He was listed in good condition Thursday afternoon.

Police do not expect any others to be charged in connection with the fight, they said.

"We are pleased to announce that all of the individuals that we believe were involved in that attack have been arrested," Feithen said.

The court dates of the men charged vary, but they all have scheduled status hearings next week.

Aggravated battery is a Class 3 Felony punishable by up to five years in prison. Mob action is a Class 4 Felony punishable by up to three years in prison. Attempted first-degree murder is a Class X Felony punishable by up to 30 years in prison.
