NORTH AURORA – Police arrested a convicted sex offender for being near children in a park.
David L. Leffew, 45, of Aurora, is charged with being in a "school zone" as a convicted sex offender.
Leffew was charged Tuesday after someone reported that on Monday he was in Schneider Park, located at Dee Road and Laurel Drive, said Lt. Scott Buziecki of the North Aurora Police Department.
Leffew was convicted of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, stemming from a 1989 arrest in Aurora, according to court records. Although he no longer is required to register with the state's Sex Offender Registry, he must follow certain restrictions, Buziecki said.
One of those restrictions involves being a certain distance from child-oriented locations, such as a park, he said.
Buziecki added that Leffew was in the park with someone he knew, watching their child play.
"He was there, but what everyone is going to want to know is if he was trying to get kids, and no he wasn't," Buziecki said.
Leffew no longer is required to be on the state registry because the law at the time of his arrest required a 10-year registration period.
Leffew was released from jail Tuesday after posting $350 bond.
