Foster, Newman back effort to expel controversial Georgia congresswoman

U.S. Reps. Marie Newman and Bill Foster

U.S. Reps. Bill Foster and Marie Newman voiced support for expelling a member of Congress from Georgia for her past comments espousing conspiracy theories and advocating violence.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s comments and social media activity have caused headaches for Republicans in Congress and drawn widespread condemnation.

Foster, D-Naperville, said in a Facebook post he is co-sponsoring a resolution to expel Greene, R-Georgia, from the House of Representatives. He referenced Greene’s support for Facebook posts which advocated violence against Democrats and the FBI.

“There is no excuse for advocating extrajudicial violence against Members of Congress or other government officials,” Foster wrote. “There should be no place in Congress for someone who crosses that line. Ever.”

In an email to supporters, Newman, D-La Grange, called Greene “one of the leading voices amongst the far-right GOP officials responsible for aiding President Trump’s betrayal of our democracy and inciting the insurrectionist attack on January 6th.”

“Marjorie Taylor Greene has harassed victims of the Parkland school shooting and spread vile misinformation that the deeply traumatic event was staged and will now be making decisions about our children’s education as a member of the Education Committee,” Newman wrote.

Newman added her “disgusting behavior and violent hate speech wouldn’t be allowed in an elementary school” before asking supporters to sign onto a petition to call for expelling Greene “immediately.”
