A Joliet man was jailed after he pointed a gun at his girlfriend, threatened to harm her and took away her cellphone when she retreated into a bathroom to call 911, police said.

Shortly after 2:30 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to a residence in the 500 block of Morgan Street after receiving a report of a domestic battery, according to Joliet police.

“Upon arrival, officers could hear a female screaming and it sounded like a physical altercation was occurring within the residence,” police said.

When officers began to force their way into the home, Ledell Mims, 34, opened the door, and the officers met with a woman who was “visibly shaken,” police said.

Police said the officers determined she was battered by Mims, her boyfriend after the two got into an argument.

“The argument escalated at which time Mims pointed a handgun at the victim and threatened to harm her,” police said.

The woman retreated to the bathroom to contact 911, police said. Mims came into the bathroom, took her cellphone and shoved her with both hands, police said. The woman was uninjured in the incident.

Mims was taken into custody without incident and officers recovered a loaded handgun that appeared to have a defaced serial number, police said.

Mims was taken to the Will County jail, where he is being held on a $250,000 bond.
