Man struck man in leg with baseball bat outside Joliet liquor store, cops say

Beaten man complained of loud music before attack, police said

A Joliet man struck another man with a baseball bat after he was told to turn down his loud music outside Michalene’s Liquors, police said.

Joliet police detectives investigated the Sept. 7 incident and were able to secure a warrant Sept. 30 that led to the arrest of Manuel Burgos, 45, of the 1400 block of Highland Avenue.

About 8:15 p.m. Sept. 7, officers responded to a report of a fight in the parking lot of Michalene’s Liquors, Joliet police Sgt. Dwayne English said.

Officers found a man on the ground in front of the 692 Theodore St. liquor store who was “conscious and bleeding,” English said.

The man was in the parking lot when Burgos arrived in his vehicle and was playing loud music, English said. The man asked Burgos to turn down his music but he refused, he said.

“The victim went inside of the store, at which time both exchanged words again that appeared to be leading to a fight,” English said.

Burgos then retrieved a baseball bat from his vehicle and struck the man in the leg, causing him to fall on the ground, English said. Afterward, Burgos fled in his vehicle, he said.

The beaten man was taken by ambulance to AMITA Health Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet after suffering a serious injury to his leg, English said.

Officers checked the area and made contact with Burgos at his Highland Avenue residence, English said.

“Burgos admitted to striking the victim with the bat, but refused to exit his residence to speak further with officers on the scene,” English said.

The investigation led to a $500,000 warrant signed by Will County Judge Art Smigielski. Prosecutors charged Burgos with aggravated battery in connection with the incident.

Burgos remained in jail as of Wednesday afternoon.
