A man charged with committing an armed robbery at a Joliet GameStop store claimed he took a Playstation console and Batman toy “so his son would have a nice Christmas,” police reports show.
Jocqui McGee, 25, of Bellwood, also claimed he didn’t intend to hurt anyone at GameStop on Route 59 near Theodore Street and that he apparently dropped off what he stole to “an unknown Toys for Tots donation box,” according to police reports.
McGee was taken to the Will County jail following his arrest on Dec. 19 and he remains locked up on a $500,000 bond. He’ll need to post $50,000 for his release.
McGee faces charges of armed robbery and possessing a firearm while his firearm owner’s identification card was revoked. A judge ordered McGee to have no contact with any GameStop store as a condition of his bond.
A witness told police on Dec. 19 that McGee entered the GameStop store to ask about a Playstation console and he was provided a list of games he could choose if he decided to purchase the gaming device, police reports said.
While an employee at the front register was helping McGee with a transaction, McGee displayed what appeared to be a handgun and he quietly “made a statement to the effect of, ‘Give me everything,’” police reports said.
The employee was confused on whether McGee “wanted money from the cash register and paused for a moment,” police reports said.
“McGee then took a Playstation 4 Pro with various games and a Batman action figure off the checkout counter and left the store,” police reports said.
Two other employees and several customers were inside the store at the time and were unaware of what was happening, police said.
When Bolingbrook police officers learned of the robbery, they contacted the GameStop at 143 N. Weber Road and provided employees with a photo of the suspect and asked them to call if anyone matched the description, police reports said.
The Bolingbrook GameStop employees eventually did call the police when McGee entered the store “wearing identical clothing” to what he wore at the Joliet store, police reports said.
After McGee’s arrest, officers recovered a loaded Glock handgun, $141 and a list of the Playstation games he was provided at the Joliet GameStop, police reports.
During an interview, McGee told the officers he was “passing through Joliet and realized he had the firearm on him and decided to stop in the GameStop,” police reports said.
“Due to his family not being in the best financial situations, he decided to take the Playstation and Batman action figure from the Joliet GameStop so his son would have a nice Christmas,” police reports said.
McGee said “he didn’t intend to hurt anyone” and that after he left the Joliet store, he “drove to an unknown Toys for Tots donation box and dropped off the proceeds from the robbery” before heading to the Bolingbrook GameStop, police reports said.
