At least one dead in 8-motorcycle I-80 wreck: cops

A group of bikers were traveling together in Interstate 80 near Joliet when eight of them “crashed into each other” for “unknown reasons” Saturday morning, killing at least one, according to the Illinois State Police.

The Will County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Edwin Torres, a 45-year-old Chicago resident. Torres was pronounced dead shortly before noon, according to the coroner’s office. His autopsy was scheduled for Sunday.

The group of bikers was heading west on I-80 and approaching Interstate 55 about 10:15 a.m. when, for “unknown reasons,” eight of the motorcycles “crashed into each other,” police said.

“There was one confirmed fatality on scene,” police said.

Another motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to police, and six others were hospitalized with serious injuries.

Westbound I-80 was shut down for about five hours while the crash was investigated, police said.
