A man suffered traumatic cardiac arrest and died after he was mauled by a pit bull terrier named Kaedo that became agitated during an argument, according to Joliet police and fire officials.

About 6:30 p.m. Thursday, emergency crews with the Joliet Fire Department responded to a report of a dog bite at a residence in the 1200 block of Arthur Avenue, according to Joliet Fire Chief Greg Blaskey.

When the crews arrived, they found Erick Quinn, 46, of Joliet, on the floor of the home, pulseless and not breathing, Blaskey said. A Joliet police officer was performing CPR on him.

“The patient was a victim of a dog mauling, from a single dog, and suffered traumatic cardiac arrest due to the injuries caused by dog bites,” Blaskey said.

Quinn did not live at the residence and was only visiting, he said.

Quinn was treated and taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, where he “unfortunately succumbed to his injuries,” Joliet police said.

The Will County Coroner’s Office reported on Friday that Quinn was pronounced deceased at 7:11 p.m. Thursday at a Silver Cross Hospital emergency room.

“An autopsy was performed today that showed Mr. Quinn sustained multiple injuries due to a dog attack,” officials said.

An investigation of the incident revealed that two people inside the Arthur Avenue residence were involved in a loud argument that agitated 5-year-old Kaedo, police said.

“The victim attempted to intervene to calm the dog at which time the dog began repeatedly (attacked) the victim,” police said.

The occupants of the home attempted to free Quinn from Kaedo but were unsuccessful, police said.

“The dog eventually let go and the occupants were able to secure the dog prior to calling 911,” police said.

Kaedo is currently in the custody of Joliet Township Animal Control. The incident remains under investigation by the Joliet Police Department.
