The Sterling boys basketball team rolled to a 75-37 win over Rochelle in its season opener Wednesday at the Strombom Holiday Tournament in Sycamore, while Newman advanced to the Oregon Thanksgiving Tournament semifinals with a 69-44 win over Harvard.
The Rock Falls girls basketball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 51-25 win over Sandwich on Tuesday at Tabor Gym, while the Sterling girls dropped their Western Big 6 opener 52-23 to Alleman at Musgrove Fieldhouse.
Newman erased an early five-point deficit to take the lead into halftime, then pulled away with a big third-quarter surge to defeat North Boone 62-50 in the season opener for both teams Monday night at the Oregon Thanksgiving Tournament.
The Newman Comets got on a roll down the stretch last season, finding ways to win in the postseason and advancing to the Sweet 16 for the seventh time in the last 10 years. This year, they hope to pick up where they left off with some new faces on the court.
