Three locals named unanimous all-conference in Three Rivers boys basketball, 10 earn spots on team

The Amboy baseball team defeated Morrison 10-4 in the season opener for both teams Wednesday at City Park in Amboy.

The Clippers exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the fifth to erase a 4-1 deficit. Tucker Lindenmeyer ripped a two-run double in the inning, and Haden McCoy had a pinch-hit two-run double. Andruw Jones drove in a run, and also picked up the win in relief, allowing one run and one hit in three innings; he struck out seven and walked three.

Amboy starter Ian Eller struck out 11 and walked one in four innings, allowing three runs and two hits. He struck out the side in the second, third and fourth innings, and recorded seven straight Ks from the first through third innings.

Galena 11, Milledgeville 0, 5 inn.: Ethan Hefel struck out nine and walked two in a one-hitter to lead the Pirates past the Missiles in Milledgeville.

Payton Sarber had the lone hit, and Ashton Nobis took the loss on the mound for Milledgeville, allowing six runs and seven hits in 2 1/3 innings, with four strikeouts and three walks.

Hefel also had two hits and drove in three runs, while Parker Studtmann had three hits and three runs, and Joey Heller had three hits, two runs and an RBI for Galena. Ryan Stoffregen drove in a pair of runs.

Aquin 6, Eastland 4: The Cougars fell to the Bulldogs in their season opener, played at Highland community College in Freeport.

Hunter Miller singled, doubled and drove in a run, Max McCullough had two singles and an RBI, and Cole Huber added a run and an RBI for Eastland. Carson Heckman took the loss on the mound in relief of starter Owen Rogers.

Cade Geiken had three hits and three RBIs for Aquin, which rallied from a 3-2 deficit with four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Softball

Morrison 9, Amboy 1: Marissa Folkers tossed a three-hitter to lead the Fillies to victory in their season opener on the road.

Folkers struck out three and walked one, and got plenty of support from the offense, which scored five runs in the third and three more in the fourth. Bella Duncan had three hits for Morrison.

Hannah Blanton took the loss for the Clippers, who scored their lone run in the sixth. Blanton, Haleigh Stenzel and Maeve Larson each had a hit for Amboy.

Riverdale 13, West Carroll 1, 6 inn.: The Rams scored seven runs in the fourth inning and five more in the sixth to defeat the Thunder in Thomson.

Maddie Eppenstein drove in the lone run for West Carroll, tying the game in the bottom of the third. Kendal Asay took the loss, allowing eight runs and 10 hits in five-plus innings; she struck out one and walked four.

Kayleigh Hartson struck out seven and walked one in four innings for Riverdale, allowing one run and two hits. She also hit a two-run home run, and Breckin DeLaRosa added an RBI double and a three-run homer for the Rams. Olivia Mabeus and Taylor Kohrt both had two-run singles in the sixth inning; Mabeus finished with three hits.

Boys basketball

TRAC announces all-conference teams: Three local players earned unanimous all-conference honors, and 10 area players were honored on the Three Rivers Athletic Conference boys basketball teams, the league announced Wednesday.

Newman senior Marcus Williams and Bureau Valley senior Carter Salisbury were unanimous selections on the TRAC East first team, while Newman sophomore Lucas Simpson and Bureau Valley senior Adam Johnson were second-team selections. Newman junior Nolan Britt and BV senior Layton Britt were named honorable mention.

In the TRAC West, Erie-Prophetstown senior Kolby Franks was a unanimous first-teamer, while senior teammate Connor Sibley and Morrison senior Alex Anderson were named to the second team. Erie-Prophetstown junior Caleb Naftzger was an honorable mention selection.
