Man, 25, dead after being hit by Metra train in Geneva

A train arrives Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023, at the Elburn Metra Station.

A 25-year-old man died after being struck by a Metra train tracks early Thursday west of Western Avenue in Geneva, officials announced in a news release.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Geneva police and firefighters were called at 6 a.m. to assist Metra police for a report of a train accident involving a pedestrian. Officers met with the train conductor and located the man near the Union Pacific-West railway, according to the release.

The train struck him on the northernmost track.

He was reportedly alone at the time of the incident, and preliminary findings indicate no foul play is suspected, according to the release.

The stopped Metra train did not block the Western Avenue crossing.

The incident remains under investigation by the Metra Police Department and the Kane County Coroner’s Office.

The man’s family still is being notified. Metra police and the Coroner’s Office said they would not be releasing his name at this time.

Service on the UP West line, which runs between Elburn and Ogilvie station downtown, was halted for a time following the incident. It was later restored, but Metra warned of “extensive delays” and some potential scheduling changes because of what the transit agency called a “trespasser strike.”

Metra apologized to those who didn’t receive alerts about the schedule disruptions, saying the delivery system it uses for X alerts was not working.
