Woman killed in crash near Hampshire

Icy roads are thought to have played a role in a crash that killed woman Tuesday morning near Hampshire, according to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash, which appeared to be head-on, happened about 6:40 a.m. on two-lane Allen Road, just west of Ketchum Road, according to the Hampshire Fire Protection District.

An initial investigation by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office indicated that a Chevrolet Trailblazer was driving west on Allen Road when it crossed the center line for an unknown reason and struck a Nissan Versa headed east, according to a news release.

The woman, who was the driver and sole occupant of the Nissan, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office. She was identified as Maria Delacruz Serena-Garnica, 40, of Elgin.

An occupant of the other vehicle was taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital, and another person was treated at the scene, according to the Hampshire Fire Protection District. The sheriff’s office said both had minor injuries.

No tickets had been issued as of Tuesday afternoon. The crash remains under investigation by Kane County Sheriff’s Office, although it said in the release that icy roads are thought to have played a role.
