Coroner identifies 87-year-old Spring Grove man killed after being hit by garbage truck

Glenn R. Reed, 87, was walking near the intersection of Michigan and Huron drives in Spring Grove when the crash occurred, police have said

The McHenry County Coroner’s Office has identified 87-year-old Spring Grove man Glenn R. Reed as the pedestrian who died on Wednesday after being struck by a garbage truck.

Reed, formerly of Linn Township, Lake Geneva, was a longtime member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and previously owned Reed’s Construction and Pier Service, according to his obituary.

The crash happened at 7:28 a.m. Wednesday while Reed was walking near the intersection of Michigan and Huron drives in Spring Grove, according to the Spring Grove Police Department.

Spring Grove Police Chief Michael Niedzwiecki confirmed Friday that the truck was a Flood Brothers Disposal truck.

A LifeNet Emergency Medical Services Air helicopter was requested; however, because of Reed’s condition, the Spring Grove Fire Protection District took the man to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital, where he died that same day.

Preliminary findings show Reed died from blunt force trauma, according to the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.

No citations were issued in connection with the crash as of Monday.
