Carpentersville man receives prison sentence in connection with 5th DUI arrest

Smith’s blood-alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit the night of his arrest, prosecutors say

A 37-year-old Carpentersville man has been sentenced to prison in connection with his fifth arrest on driving under the influence charges, according to prosecutors.

Robert M. Smith, of the 1400 block of Indian Lane, accepted an offer from the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office on Thursday and pleaded guilty to a felony count of aggravated DUI. In exchange for his plea, McHenry County Judge Michael Coppedge sentenced Smith to four years in prison and prosecutors agreed to dismiss additional counts of aggravated DUI, court records show.

Smith’s blood-alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit the night of his Jan. 18, 2020, arrest, according to a news release from the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Officers with the Woodstock Police Department responded about 11:30 p.m. to a report of a drunken driver, according to the release. When police arrived they found Smith, who was driving a truck with a snowplow and showed “signs of heavy intoxication,” according to the release.

Smith previously was arrested and charged with driving under the influence in Kane County and Wisconsin four times between 2004 and 2013, according to charging documents.
