A 59-year-old Lake in the Hills woman was charged Thursday with reckless discharge of a firearm after police investigated gunshots that were heard Sunday night in a residential neighborhood.

Anita M. Gustafson, who lives in the 500 block of Delaware Drive, where the shots were reported to have been heard, also was charged with unlawful possession of eight marijuana plants and 100 to 500 grams of marijuana, court records show.

Lake in the Hills police were dispatched about 10 p.m. Sunday for the sound of gunshots heard in the area, according to a news release. An investigation determined that residence was in the 500 block of Delaware Drive.

Officers secured the residence that night and requested assistance from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office multijurisdictional SWAT team, according to the release. A search warrant was executed about 2:22 a.m.

Police are uncertain what led to the shooting or whether there was a dispute beforehand, Lake in the Hills Deputy Chief Matthew Mannino said in an interview.

The firearm involved in the shooting was a handgun, Mannino said. He said he was unable to say how many shell casings were recovered or how many shots were fired. The shooting took place outside Gustafson’s residence in the 500 block of Delaware Drive.

People were in Gustafson’s home when police searched the residence, Gustafson said. It still is unclear whether Gustafson fired the shots within the vicinity of other people outdoors, he said.

The reason shots were fired still is under investigation.

A nearby resident reported the shooting, Mannino said.

Gustafson was arrested at 4:27 p.m. Thursday and taken to the McHenry County Jail. She still was in custody as of Friday afternoon, a jail log showed.

Gustafson did not have an attorney listed as of 3 p.m. Friday.
