Johnsburg’s Macy Madsen started the season with a bang, pouring in a career-high 32 points in a 61-57 win over Marian Central in the third-place game of the first Johnsburg Thanksgiving Girls Basketball Tournament.
The Skyhawks senior was chosen to the all-tournament team and has scored 20 or more points in three of four games for an average of 23.2 points a game.
Madsen will look to carry over her hot start into Kishwaukee River Conference play, where the Skyhawks hope to contend for a conference championship.
Madsen was voted Northwest Herald Athlete of the Week by readers and answered a few questions from sports writer Alex Kantecki.
Who has the best basketball moves in your family?
Madsen: My sister Morgan has the best basketball moves. Megan was always a beast on defense.
What was the best part about growing up with two older sisters who also played basketball?
Madsen: The best part was always looking up to them and always having hard competition to go up against when we played “1-v-1″ in the driveway.
Who is your favorite professional athlete?
Madsen: [Cleveland Cavaliers center] Tacko Fall.
What is your favorite part about Thanksgiving?
Madsen: Seeing my family and playing games.
What’s your favorite and least favorite Thanksgiving food?
Madsen: My favorite is cornbread and key lime pie. My least favorite is stuffing.
Do you have any rituals or superstitions before you play?
Madsen: I always have to listen to hardcore rock before I play.
Is there a significance to wearing No. 13?
Madsen: I always see the No. 13 throughout my day, and that’s why I think it’s my lucky number.
Who has had the biggest impact on you as an athlete?
Madsen: My sisters and coaches.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
Madsen: When people chew with their mouths open.
What scares you?
Madsen: Heights.
What is something you are not good at, but you wish you could do well?
Madsen: I am not good at reading. I can never sit down and read a book, and it takes me forever to read books. I would rather be up and be doing something.
