Man flown after single-vehicle crash near Richmond on Wednesday

Crash under investigation by McHenry County Sheriff’s office

A 75-year-old McHenry man was in critical condition following a car crash off Tryon Grove Road in the Richmond area Wednesday afternoon, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s office.

The man, who was not identified, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and improper lane use, according to a department release Thursday.

The driver and sole occupant in a 2013 Kia Sorento was driving west on Tryon Grove Road when the car crossed into the southbound lane “for unknown reasons,” according to a sheriff’s office news release.

“The vehicle went into the south ditch, hit a culvert and overturned,” according to the release.

The driver was flown to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, Richmond Township Fire Protection District Fire Marshal Scott Peterson said.

Bystanders called for help at 4:43 p.m. for the crash that happened at Tryon Grove and Greenwood roads, Peterson said.

A Wonder Lake chief arrived at the scene about 4:50 p.m. and found a car had rolled over in a ditch east of Barnard Mill Road, Peterson said.

“He was out of the vehicle; there was no traffic,” he said. “They don’t know if bystanders pulled him out or if he was ejected. It’s unclear on that.”

First responders from Woodstock and the McHenry County Sheriff’s office were first at the scene, Peterson said.

Good Samaritans performed CPR until paramedics arrived, according to the sheriff’s office.

A McHenry LifeNet helicopter was requested and arrived at the Richmond fire station at 5:10 p.m. The man was stabilized and flown to the hospital, Peterson said.

Responders from Wonder Lake, Hebron, Woodstock and the McHenry County Sheriff’s office assisted in the call.

Tryon Grove Road had reopened by about 9:30 p.m., the sheriff’s said.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the crash.
