Thunderstorms will give way to snow possibly across northern Illinois as cold front moves in

Volatile storms bringing major drop in temperature

Thunderstorms storms producing heavy downpours along with small hail and high winds caused volatile weather across parts of Illinois on Sunday.

Areas south of Interstate 80, including southern parts of Kankakee County, were under tornado watches and then warnings Sunday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

Strong winds, with gusts ranging from 45 to 55 mph, will usher in a cold front Sunday night that could result in snow showers in some areas, the NWS said.

Wind-whipped snow showers and much colder temperatures are expected Sunday night into Monday morning, the NWS said.

Roads may be slick with drivers needing to be wary of black ice conditions, the NWS said.

Another chance for light snow will come Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday evening.

The five-day forecast (Dec. 29-Jan.2) from the National Weather Service.
