IVCC offers Cherry Mine Disaster class in virtual format

Historian Jim Gibbons talks about working conditions in the mines

Illinois Valley Community College’s Continuing Education Center offers “The Cherry Mine Disaster in 1909” (HLR-7613-103) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, in a virtual format.

Historian Jim Gibbons will discuss working conditions in the mines leading up to the disaster and how the deaths of 259 men and boys would lead to the establishment of stronger fire and safety regulations governing mines in Illinois and play a part in the development of the Illinois Workmen’s Compensation Act.
