Briefs: St. Bede’s Trenton Acuncius earns at-large spot for state bowling

Trenton Acuncius

St. Bede senior Trenton Acuncius’ bowling season was in limbo after Saturday’s Orland Park Sectional.

Acuncius rolled a 1,347 six-game series to finish one spot and nine pins behind the final individual state-qualifying berth.

That made him a potential at-large qualifier.

Acuncius learned Monday he earned one of two at-large spots in the state tournament. The IHSA selects the two bowlers who are the fewest pins behind the last qualifying spot in the sectional.

“It’s a sigh of relief going to state,” Acuncius said. “All this hard work I’ve put in this season has really helped me to where I am now. God gave me a second chance, and I’m going to take it.”

The state tournament is Friday and Saturday at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon.
