Roundup: L-P boys basketball wins conference opener

Seniors Michael Jereb, John Riva and Sean Whitfield scored 13 points each as the La Salle-Peru boys basketball team opened its Interstate Eight Conference schedule with a 63-49 victory over Plano on Friday in Plano.

The Cavaliers improved to 4-2 overall.

Earlville 64, Serena 62: Ryan Browder poured in 29 points Friday to help the Red Raiders win their Little Ten Conference opener in Serena.

Griffin Cook had 20 points for Earlville (2-3, 1-0).

Putnam County 47, Dwight 43: The Panthers picked up a Tri-County Conference victory Friday in Granville.

IVC 66, Princeton 65: The Tigers led by 19 points at halftime but the lead slipped away in the second half in a nonconference loss Friday in Chillicothe.

Somonauk 58, DePue 41: Andres Moreno scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds Friday as the Little Giants dropped a Little Ten Conference game in DePue.

Koby Hayes added nine points and nine rebounds for DePue.

Erie-Prophetstown 53, Bureau Valley 41: The Storm lost a Three Rivers Conference game Friday in Prophetstown.

Tri-Valley 39, Fieldcrest 35: The Knights lost a Heart of Illinois Conference game Friday in Downs.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

St. Bede 48, Mendota 22: Leah Smudzinski scored 18 points to lead the St. Bede girls basketball team to a 48-22 victory over Mendota in a Three Rivers Conference East Division game in Mendota.

Lia Bosnich added 14 points for the Bruins (2-5).

Paige Manning scored seven points to lead Mendota.

DePue 34, Hiawatha 24: Azucena Villagomez scored 14 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to help the Little Giants to a Little Ten Conference victory in Kirkland.

Cayley Harrison had eight points for DePue, while Emily Marquez added six points and seven rebounds.

Fieldcrest 54, Tri-Valley 18: Carolyn Megow had a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds as the Knights rolled to a Heart of Illinois Conference victory in Downs.

Ashlyn May had 15 points, seven assists and seven steals for Fieldcrest (8-0, 2-0 HOIC), which led 27-6 after the first quarter, while Kaitlin White added 11 points.

Henry-Senachwine/Lowpoint-Washburn 37, Seneca 25: Nakeita Kessling scored 17 points, grabbed eight rebounds and swiped seven steals to help the Mallards to a Tri-County Conference victory in Seneca.

Tandyn VanEtten added 10 points and seven rebounds for Henry.

Bloomington Central Catholic 61, La Salle-Peru 40: Brooklyn Ficek scored 21 points as the Cavaliers lost a nonconference game in Bloomington.

Bailey Pode chipped in eight points for L-P (6-1).

Serena 28, Earlville 23: Alexis Olson had seven points and nine rebounds as the Red Raiders lost a Little Ten Conference game in Serena.

Elizabeth Browder contributed five points and 10 rebounds for Earlville.

BOYS BOWLING

La Salle-Peru 3,428, Ottawa 2,984: Chance Hank rolled a 647 series with a 266 high game as the Cavaliers picked up an Interstate Eight Conference victory at the Illinois Valley Super Bowl in Peru.

Ethan Picco bowled a 626 series with a 259 high game for L-P, while Peyton Baker added a 610 series.

WRESTLING

Princeton 47, Morrison 24: Steven Benavidez won by fall to help the Tigers to a victory in Morrison.

Matthew Harris won by technical fall for Princeton.

Calvary Christian 56, DePue 31: Andres Moreno had 14 points and nine rebounds as the Little Giants fell in a nonconference game in Normal.
