Roundup: La Salle-Peru boys soccer falls in regional semifinal

The No. 2-seeded Sterling boys soccer team scored two goals in the final 11:18 to pull away from No. 9 La Salle-Peru for a 4-0 victory Wednesday in a Class 2A La Salle-Peru Regional semifinal at the L-P Sports Complex in La Salle.

Sterling (10-8-4) advances to play No. 5 Streator in the championship at 3 p.m. Saturday.

“We game planned after playing them a couple weeks ago, and the boys executed that game plan pretty well,” Sterling coach Brian Cebula said. “I’m just thankful that they listened, they executed it, and I’m glad to be coming back here Saturday.”

Fabricio Pena scored twice for the Golden Warriors. Nathan Sanchez and Luis Ibarra Rodriguez added Sterling’s other goals, with keeper Sergio Garcia keeping the clean sheet. La Salle-Peru finishes the season 10-13-2.

Orion def. Hall, 25-8, 25-23

Taylor Coutts had four assists, three kills, three digs and an ace Wednesday as the Red Devils lost a Three Rivers Conference crossover match on senior night in Spring Valley.

Ella Taliani added nine digs for Hall.

Heartland def. IVCC, 25-15, 25-11, 25-19

La Salle-Peru graduate Paige Champlin had 22 assists Wednesday as the Eagles lost in a nonconference match in Bloomington.

Emma Thomas added eight kills and an ace for IVCC (3-20).
