The Christmas season is underway as far as the Streator Salvation Army is concerned.
It may be 52 days until Christmas, but Salvation Army Director Judy Booze said applications are available now through Nov. 30 to sign up for the agency’s Christmas programs that provide gifts for children in the “forgotten age” 13 to 17, and food vouchers for seniors 55 and older.
Streator area residents can apply between 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. If someone is unable to make that time, they can make an appointment by calling 815-672-2746. Applicants also must provide proof of income, a photo ID and either postmarked mail or a utility bill for proof of address.
The Red Kettle drive will begin Saturday, Nov. 20, through Dec. 24, with the Streator High School Key Club kicking off the bell ringing. Anybody who would like to volunteer as a bell ringer can call the Salvation Army or register after Nov. 22 on the Salvation Army’s registertoring.com
This year’s goal is $42,000. Bell ringers will man Walmart, Walgreens and Kroger. The drive is the largest and most significant fundraiser for the program.
Booze said after applications are received an Angel Tree will be placed at Walmart for anyone who wishes to buy gifts for a child from their Christmas list. The Angle Trees are about two to three weeks away from going up, Booze said.
Booze also said the Salvation Army will continue its Keep Streator Warm Program, which is coordinated annually with the Streator Rotary Club. Booze said she has more winter coats to give away, including children’s coats. This program has no application necessary.
“I will not turn anyone away in need of a winter coat,” Booze said.
