Champlain Street bridge in Ottawa closed to thru traffic

Pedestrian bridge work begins, should finish by the weekend

Champlain Street at the Goose Creek Bridge in the 1800 block will be closed to all thru traffic from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The bridge will be open to all traffic at night and as long as the weather cooperates, the work repairing the long-closed pedestrian bridge will be completed by the weekend.

The construction is being handled by the Marquette Steel Company. The City Council approved a $90,000 quote in April. Repairs initially were put on hold at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Commissioner Wayne Eichelkraut said in April getting this project done will be important because people have been walking on the street and finding a sidewalk across Goose Creek is a long trip around.

The bridge itself has remained open to vehicle traffic, but the sidewalks weren’t considered structurally sound and have remained closed.
