The Marquette boys basketball team outscored Serena 27-13 in the second half of a 52-36 triumph in the quarterfinals at the Hinckley-Big Rock Class 1A Regional. The Crusaders were led by 20 points and nine rebounds from Ben Thumm and 14 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocks from Kipp Caputo. The Huskers received 11 points from Jake Berggren and eight points from Rich McCaslin.

The Marquette boys hoops squad used a 21-9 second-quarter advantage in a 72-50 win over Newark in the semifinals of the Serena Class A Regional. The Crusaders were led by Dustin Gama [21 points, 11 rebounds], J.C. Thumm [16 points], and Andrew Swords [eight points]. The Norsemen were paced by Mitch Dunlap [17 points], Tom Belinski [10 points], and Kyle Janssen [nine points, three steals].

Also in the regional at Serena, the host Huskers outscored Paw Paw 33-10 in the middle two quarters to advance to the title game with a 69-37 victory. Connor Finley led Serena with 23 points and six steals followed by 13 points from Dallas Kempiak, eight points and 10 assists from Cooper Westvig, and 13 rebounds from James DeBolt. Paw Paw received a game-high 24 points and seven rebounds from Paul Prawdzik.

The Fieldcrest boys basketball club used a 16-8 start to defeat Roanoke-Benson 78-63 in the semifinals at the Eureka Class A Regional. Jake Martin and Jarrod Cook netted 21 points each from the Knights while Jordan Krone popped in 18 points.

The Fieldcrest boys hoops squad used a 25-16 third-quarter advantage in a 71-52 triumph over Lowpoint-Washburn in the semifinals of the Fieldcrest Class A Regional. The Knights were led by Ryne Haag [17 points, 10 rebounds], Michael Hall [14 points], Neil Ropp [13 points, seven steals], and Andy Craig [12 points].

The Newark boys basketball team — on a lay-up with two seconds left by Dan Shields — advanced past Marquette 61-60 in the semifinals of the Midland Class A Regional in Varna. Jeff Eddy paced the Norsemen with 23 points and 10 rebounds while Shields finished with 21 points. The Crusaders’ John Calkins poured in a game-best 28 points with Nick Brolley adding 15 points, and Matt Feller 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Seneca boys hoops club used a 15-2 to start the second half in a 54-42 win over Woodland in the semifinals of the St, Bede Class A Regional. The Fighting Irish were paced by 18 points and five rebounds from Jeramy Sherwood, 13 points and four rebounds from Tiffin Misener, and 10 points from Mike Davis. Chris McBride led the Warriors with nine points.

The Flanagan boys basketball club captured the Wenona Class A Regional championship with a 58-51 win over Lowpoint-Washburn. Brian VanWeelden led the Falcons with 18 points, followed by 16 points from Brian Moore, 10 points from Terry Falcomata, and nine points from Jason Abels.

The Ottawa boys hoops squad used a 27-13 fourth-quarter advantage in a North Central Illinois Conference win over Streator at Kingman Gymnasium. The Bulldogs were paced by Brian Roper [25 points, 14 rebounds], Jeff Vezain [14 points, seven rebounds], and Jim Farrell [13 points, six rebounds]. The Bulldogs were led by Brian Bengston [23 points, 10 rebounds], Sean Reed [11 points], and Eric Hoffmeyer [eight points, eight rebounds].

The Crusaders were led by Miguel Gonzalo [16 points], Brian Price [14 points], and Abe Carretto [10 points].

The Seneca girls basketball team defeated Kewanee 51-35 in the quarterfinals and Piasa Southwestern 65-56 in the semifinals to advance to the Class A State Finals in Champaign. Angie Stubblefield had 16 points, Donna Einhaus 14 points, and Veronica Hutfles 12 points and six rebounds for the Lady Irish against the Lady Boilermakers. Against Piasa Southwestern, Hutfles had 21 points, Stubblefield 19 points, and Einhaus 16 points.
