High school sports roundup for Wednesday, April 14: Nazareth’s Ryan Smith strikes out 10 in five innings of no-hit ball

BASEBALL

Nazareth 4, Fenwick 0

Ryan Smith threw five innings of no-hit, 10-strikeout baseball. Sebastian Gutierrez allowed one hit while striking out two in two innings of work.

Freshman Cooper Malamazian had a double and a run scored while freshman Bobby Kutt had a single and an RBI. Senior Wylder Guido had a triple with an RBI and run scored for the Roadrunners (2-0).

Rockford Christian 5, Westmont 1

James Postawa, Jason Czaplewski and Noah Grimm each had their first varsity hits, Grimm driving in a run for the Sentinels (0-2).

Ridgewood 10, Wheaton Academy 0

SOFTBALL

Wheaton Warrenville South 5, Naperville North

Katey Pierce struck out 12 and scattered four hits, and had two hits at the plate for the Tigers. Emma Schusler had a big two-out, two-run single, Maggie Reinert had two singles and Katie Jensen two walks and scored two runs, and singled from the leadoff spot.

Lyons 10, Leyden 3

Lily Hanafin and Ava Kostecki each struck out five batters, and Ava Paganis and Emily Joseph each had three hits of the Lions’ 15 hits in their season opener.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Benet d. Marian Central 25-12, 25-9

Kyla Kenney had seven kills and 10 digs, Daria Rodriguez 10 kills, Rachel Muisenga 28 assists and Caroline Doyle 11 digs for the Redwings (8-0, 6-0 East Suburban Catholic Conference) at the ESCC Tournament.

IC Catholic Prep d. Aurora Christian 25-7, 25-9

Sophie Hurt had 10 assists and seven digs, Jess Sobon eight kills and Lucy Russ four kills and six digs for the Knights (14-0, 11-0 Metro Suburban Conference). Ava Falduto had seven digs, Isabella Muti three kills and Allie Geiger three blocks.

Montini d. St. Ignatius 25-18, 25-22

Hailey Goetz had nine assists and seven digs, Jordan Heatherly six kills and 11 assists, Maddie Kasallis six kills and four blocks, Reeghan Boyer 17 digs and Nora Sypkens six klls and seven digs for Montini.

Sandburg d. Wheaton Warrenville South 11-25, 25-19, 26-24

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

The Tigers dropped their season opener in a tough three-set match.
