Glenbard West 4x800 runs fastest prelim time, leads state track finalists: Friday Suburban Life sports roundup

Glenbard West’s 4x800 relay team ran the fastest time of 9:10.01 in Friday’s Class 3A preliminaries at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, leading area athletes into Saturday’s finals.

Meanwhile, Hinsdale South’s Kennedy Ruff advanced to the finals in both hurdles races, running the second-fastest 300 time (43.34) and seventh-fastest 100 time (14.65).

In field events, Downers Grove North’s Sophia Solecki is in fifth place in the shot put with a throw of 41.28 meters heading into Saturday’s finals, and York’s Abigail Barz and Wheaton North’s Kara Wilkinson both cleared 3.45 meters in the pole vault to advance.

Others advancing to Saturday’s finals in Class 3A included York’s Jillian Booth in the 200 (ninth, 24.83), Hinsdale Central’s Lily Hodneland in the 800 (seventh, 2:12.99), Glenbard West’s Alexa Novak in the 1,600 (eighth, 4:58.54), York’s Karlin Janowski in the 1,600 (ninth, 4:59.51), Benet’s Gabrielle Brown in the 300 hurdles (sixth, 44.12), York’s 4x200 relay (10th, 1:14.17), Wheaton Warrenville South in the 4x400 relay (eighth, 9:17.65) and York’s 4x800 relay (10th, 9:21.56).

In Class 2A, St. Francis ran the fastest 4x800 preliminary time of 9:38.60 to advance to Saturday’s finals.

Montini’s Sydney Gertsen and St. Francis’ Erin Hinsdale advanced to the 1,600 finals with the second- and third-fastest preliminary times of 5:00.89 and 5:02.87, respectively. Hinsdale’s St. Francis teammate, Margaret Andrzejewski, advanced with the second-fastest 800 time of 2:14.92. Fenwick’s Mia Bagato (seventh, 2:16.79) also advanced. Glenbard South’s Mila Goetting cleared 3.30 meters to advance to the pole vault finals.

Softball

St. Francis 16, Steinmetz 1

Mackenzie Murlick hit two home runs and drove in four runs and Alyssa Freeman added a two-run homer as the Spartans (21-8) won the Class 3A St. Francis Regional final.

Plainfield East 9, Wheaton North 3

Plainfield East scored five runs in the first and went on to win the Class 4A Oswego East Regional final. Delaney Surber had a hit, run scored and RBI, and Sophia Walter drove in two runs for Wheaton North (9-23).

Yorkville 12, Wheaton Warrenville South 9

In a wild Class 4A Waubonsie Valley Regional final, top-seeded Yorkville scored six runs in the first inning, WW South tied it 8-8 in the top of the fourth, but the Foxes scored four in the bottom half and went on to the win.

Becca Chaney hit two homers and doubled, driving in two runs and scoring three for the Tigers (18-14).

Glenbard East 6, Lake Park 5

The Rams won the Class 4A Elk Grove Regional final.

Marist 15, Hinsdale Central 0

The Red Devils lost the Class 4A Marist Regional final.

Mother McAuley 15, Nazareth 7

The Roadrunners lost the Class 3A Mother McAuley Regional final.

De La Salle 6, Hinsdale South 2

The Hornets lost the Class 3A Hinsdale South Regional final.

Chicago Christian 12, Westmont 2

The Sentinels lost the Class 2A Westmont Regional final.

Baseball

Lincoln-Way West 4, Willowbrook 1

Mikey Garner struck out nine and allowed just one hit over five innings, and Ben Swanson had three hits for Willowbrook (28-5), but the Warriors’ 27-game win streak was snapped.

Wheaton North 6, Marmion 3

Zander Zielinski was 3 for 4 with a run scored and two RBIs for the Falcons (16-19).

Wheaton Academy 6, Glenbard West 3

Dallas Johnston hit a three-run homer in a six-run first, and the Warriors went on to the nonconference win in West Chicago. Braden Christensen was 3 for 4 with a double, run scored and RBI for Wheaton Academy. Nate Frazier was 3 for 3 with two runs scored for Glenbard West (15-19).

Hinsdale South 10, Morton 4

The Hornets scored five runs in the first and went on to the West Suburban Gold win in Darien. Frank Waitkus was 2 for 3 with three runs scored, and Taylor Mazur was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored for Hinsdale South (15-18).

York 5, Proviso East 1

Nathan Patterson and Jason Koleno each struck out five in combining on a three-hitter, and Patterson also drove in two runs and scored a run for the Dukes (14-18) in Elmhurst.

Montini 4, Andrew 4

John Louise struck out 11 in a complete-game six-hitter, and Julio Ayala had a double, two RBIs and a run scored for the visiting Broncos (22-13).

Lemont 2, Homewood-Flossmoor 1

Cannon Madej struck out 15 in a complete-game one-hitter, and Zane Schneider had a double, run scored and RBI for Lemont (29-4), which scored two runs in the fifth.

St. Laurence 5, Lyons 4

Nick Hines singled in Blake Ragsdale with the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh for Lyons, but St. Laurence walked it off with two runs in the bottom half.

Jack Slightom struck out 12 over six innings and allowed three unearned runs on two hits for the Lions (22-10).

Wheaton Warrenville South 3, Glenbard East 0

Josh Manriquez and Blake Snyder combined on a four-hit shutout with seven strikeouts for the visiting Tigers (19-12-1). Reece Franks was 2 for 3 with a run scored and RBI. Tyler Hampton struck out seven in the loss for Glenbard East.
