Newport Township crash leaves motorcyclist with serious injuries

Police seeking driver of semi-truck whose trailer struck motorcyclist

NEWPORT TOWNSHIP – Police are looking for the driver of a semitrailer that was involved in a hit-and-run crash that left a Winthop Harbor motorcyclist with serious injuries.

About 4 p.m. Sept. 6, Lake County sheriff’s deputies responded to West Russell and Kilbourne roads in Newport Township for a hit-and-run crash with injuries involving a motorcycle, according to a news release.

The driver of a 2007 Yamaha motorcycle, a 74-year-old man from Winthrop Harbor, was found at the scene with major injuries.

Preliminary investigation shows the driver of the Yamaha was traveling west on Russell Road and was making a right turn onto northbound Kilbourne Road. At the same time, a semitrailer was traveling south on Kilbourne Road and making a right turn onto westbound Russell Road. The driver of the semitrailer made a wide right turn, which caused the trailer to enter the northbound lanes of Kilbourne Road and strike the driver of the Yamaha, according to the release.

The driver of the Yamaha suffered major injuries and was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Sheriff’s crash investigators responded to the scene. Crash investigators ask anyone who has video surveillance of the crash or surveillance of the semitrailer, which continued traveling west on Russell Road, to call the sheriff’s office at 847-377-4000.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
