Record Newspapers Athlete of the Week: Felicity Allgood, Yorkville Christian, basketball, senior

Name: Felicity Allgood

School: Yorkville Christian

Sport: Basketball, senior

Why she was selected: Allgood scored 27 points – 17 coming in the first quarter – with nine rebounds, five steals and two assists as Yorkville Christian beat Gardner South Wilmington for the first win in program history. She averaged 16.5 points a game for the tournament.

She was voted by readers as the Record Newspapers Athlete of the Week. Here is her interview with Sports Editor Joshua Welge.

Welge: What did it mean to win the program’s first game, and have such a big part in it?

Allgood: It was really awesome, especially by how much we were able to hold them to and score as a team. It was cool because almost every one got into the game. It was special to be a part of it, all of us were really happy.

Welge: You had a great start to the game. What was the key to your success?

Allgood: There was a lot of steals, we forced a lot of turnovers. We pressed the whole game, got a lot of rebounds, too.

Welge: What’s it like playing for the first girls basketball team your school has had?

Allgood: It’s good. It started off rough when we only had five girls show up for the first practice, but with more games hopefully we’re building a foundation for the future.

Welge: Did you play basketball before?

Allgood: I’ve been playing basketball since the fifth grade. I transferred here the middle of my junior year from Aurora Christian.

Welge: Oh, OK. You were on a state team at Aurora Christian, right? What has the adjustment been like going to a brand new program?

Allgood: It was a big transition. At Aurora Christian we started off not so good and then we built the team up. That’s how Yorkville Christian can be. Start it off and build the program up.

Welge: You’re the only senior on this team. How you do handle that responsibility as a team leader?

Allgood: I try to keep them on the positive side. Sometimes with only six to seven girls on the team they don’t know how to look on the positive side. I try to uplift them. My sister is a freshman on the team so it’s cool that I get to play with her for the first and only time.
