The South Elgin softball team was ready for action right from the get-go Thursday afternoon at the Class 4A Fremd Sectional semifinals against No. 2-seeded St. Charles North, shutting out the North Stars 5-0.

Burlington Central senior Chase Powrozek, who faced the minimum 21 batters in a no-hitter, and also went 3 for 3 with a double, home run and three RBIs in a Class 3A regional semifinal game against Rochelle, was voted as the Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week.

After a leadoff home run by Fremd second baseman Amanda Poniecki, Saints junior Makayla Van Dinther quickly settled down and her No. 6-seeded team rallied for a tense 3-2 win over No. 1 Fremd in a Class 4A Fremd Sectional semifinal Tuesday.

Kaneland senior Freddy Hassan won his third All-State medal on Saturday at the state track meet in Charleston, tying for second place in the Class 3A high jump. Batavia also found success in field events, Isaiah Brown fourth in the triple jump and Gavin Pecor seventh in the shot.

The Marquette baseball team scored three times in the fifth to break a scoreless game, and Alec Novotney fired a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts in a 5-1 win over Aurora Christian in Saturday's Class 1A Harvest Christian Sectional championship.

Quinn Rooney's three-run home run capped off Benet's five-run fifth inning, as Benet rallied past Kaneland 5-4 to win the Class 3A Kaneland Regional title.
