State Senate: Rezin, Roth return to Springfield

State Sen. Sue Rezin and state Rep. Pam Roth, both first-term Republicans from Morris, won two new terms Tuesday.

Rezin, who defeated former state Rep. Careen Gordon, D-Morris, in 2010, was appointed to her seat to replace retiring Sen. Gary Dahl, R-Granville, before she even took office as a member of the House. Roth was then appointed to replace Rezin in the House.

Rezin, in the 38th Senate District, and Roth, in the 86th House District, now represent Bourbonnais and the west half of Kankakee County, along with southwest Will County, Grundy County and points west.

With redistricting, they will lose the Kankakee County turf with the new year, but retain southwest Will County, most of Grundy and counties west and north.

In unofficial vote totals, Rezin received 46,790 votes to 40,367 for Democrat Christine Benson, of Ottawa. Rezin took Will County 4,912 to 3,379 and Grundy 10,144 to 6,701.

"I'm glad to be past the election and I will be excited to return to my legislature work later this month," she said. "We have to find common ground in Springfield to change the direction of the state. We can no longer stand by and do nothing."

With 74 percent of the House district votes counted, Roth led Jeremy Ly, D-Minooka, 18,088 to 9,806 votes. She bested Ly 10,792 to 5,037 in Grundy County and 5,936 to 3,123 in the southwest townships of Will County around Wilmington and Braidwood.

"I'm very excited to be going back and continuing the business of the people of Illinois," Roth said, pleased to say "now I've won it on my own" — rather than being appointed by Republican Party chairmen of the current district.

"We have a lot of work to do," she said. "We need to continue to live within our means and fix our fiscal problems in Illinois, starting with Medicaid and pension reform."
