Cork Wine Bar Nears Opening

It did not take long for a new business to target the former 10-year home of Grapes & Hops Wine Bar in downtown Kankakee.

Ownership of the Cork Wine Bar, 251 S. Schuyler Ave., is targeting late October or early November for the site’s opening.

Business owners, Brent Manau and Scott Irps, owners of numerous businesses, including Country Chevrolet in Herscher and Burgers & Beer locations, are taking over operation of the site.

They signed a three-year lease.

Manau also owns the neighboring No Dogs Sports Bar, 293 S. Schuyler Ave., Kankakee. Manau and Irps are co-owners of the City Tavern, 367 S. West Ave., Kankakee.

Like Grapes & Hops, the site will feature an assortment of Illinois and Midwestern produced wines, as well as seltzers, beers, mixed drinks and slushies.

The property is owed by Steve and Matthew Harder. Amy Papineau, of Bourbonnais, who was part of Grapes & Hops, will manage the business.

Manau said Cork Wine Bar and No Dogs Sports Bar will not be in competition for customers. He views those two neighboring locations to be attracting a different customer base.

The two men noted they were not seeking adding another business to their portfolio, but when the site became available, it was too good to pass up.

They noted changes to the site will be minimal.

“The feel will be very much the same,” Irps said. “This is just a great opportunity. It’s a great spot.”
