5 things to do in DeKalb County: IESA state wrestling, comedy at Sandwich Opera House

1 Watch middle school athletes compete during the IESA state wrestling finals – 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the NIU Convocation Center, 1525 W. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb

Wrestlers in grades fifth through eighth from across the state will participate individually and in team competition in a two-class format. There are 250 schools from across the state participating this year.

Daily admission costs $7 for kindergarten through eighth-grade students and senior citizens and $12 for adults.

2 Enjoy a night of laughter at “Two 1/2 Comics” at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Sandwich Opera House, 140 E. Railroad St. in Sandwich.

Comic and former ABC-TV producer Annivar Salgado has entertained audiences throughout the Midwest and was a semifinalist in the Doral Comedy Challenge. Michelle Krajecki, one of the Chicago area’s top woman comics and a member of the High Fiber Comedy Show, also tours with a vaudeville revue known as Flashback Funny Forward. Bob Jay is known as the Man of 999 voices. His show consists of impressions of famous celebrities and cartoon characters, sound effects and music. He was a top 10 finalist in this year’s Daily Herald Chicago’s Got Talent contest.

3 Take part in one of the world’s shortest runs/walks by participating in 94.9 WDKB’s St. Patrick’s Day .1K – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Fatty’s Pub & Grille, 1312 W. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb

Adults 21 and older can run or walk in this .1K fundraiser that’s only 328 feet.

Participants will receive an event T-shirt, race bib and other swag items.

Pre-register online and pay a $20 entry fee. A portion of the registration fee will benefit Opportunity House.


4 Craft in Cortland at the Town Hall – 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Cortland’s Town Hall, 59 S. Somonauk Road in Cortland

Join Mayor Mark Pietrowski Jr. to decorate shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day. Make one to take home with you and one to decorate Town Hall.

All supplies will be provided. The event is free and open to all.


5 Have a fun evening out at Brews, Bottles and Blarney – 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Memorial Hall, 322 Waterman St. in Sycamore

This fundraiser will include a tasting of a wide variety of wines, craft beers and spirits, as well as food, games, a raffle and auction items.

The wine and spirits will include Byers Brewing Company, Forge Brewhouse, Romano Brothers, Vins and Vignobles, Keenay Farms Distillery, Kush Creek and Whiskey Acres. The samples will be complemented by Sweet Dreams catering menu featuring a pretzel bar, mashed potato bar, meatballs, charcuterie and desserts. The evening also will include a Pot of Gold raffle, games and auction items.

Tickets cost $40 each or $75 for a couple and include a commemorative tasting glass. All proceeds benefit St. Mary’s Catholic School in Sycamore.
