Daily Chronicle Athlete of the Week: DeKalb’s Gavin Engh

Gavin Engh, DeKalb

Wrestling | Senior

Why Engh was selected

The wrestler punched his ticket to the state tournament with three wins at the Conant Sectional, including two pins. He was one of a record-setting 12 Barbs to qualify for state. In an online poll, he beat Hinckley-Big Rock basketball player Ashleigh Wackerlin, DeKalb-Sycamore gymnast Maddie Kees and Sycamore bowler Brandi Stover.

Engh on winning the sectional:

“It felt great. All that hard we put in at practice, how hard we worked, I’m just glad we go to show everybody that we did it.”

On his goals for the state tournament:

“The first goal is to place. That’s the big goal, to place. We’re at 100 focused on what we need to do and what I need to do right down there.”

On what it’s like being one of a school-record 12 Barbs to qualify for state:

“It’s incredible. It makes me feel great that our senior class is going to be known as more than just good wrestlers. We were a whole team and we broke a school record.”
