Olivia Ortegel, Kaneland slam Rochelle in Interstate 8 softball

Olivia Ortegel’s grand slam highlighted Kaneland’s 14-1 win over host Rochelle in Interstate 8 Conference softball action Friday.

Ortegel (3 for 4) also had an RBI double and a single to pace a 16-hit attack. Mackenzie Hardy, Abby Latka, Lexi Workman and Olivia Stoker also racked up multiple hits for the Knights. Kaneland got things moving in the first inning on Latka’s run-scoring double.

Grace Algrim earned the win, striking out nine and walking none in six innings.

Sycamore 10, Sandwich 4: At Sandwich, Tia Durst homered, doubled and knocked in three runs for the Spartans in their Interstate 8 win.

Sycamore pounded out 17 hits, including three apiece by Chelsea Smith (RBI), Chelsea Born (double, RBI) and Emily Puentes (two RBIs). Haley Von Schnase added a pair of hits, including a double. Paige Collie also doubled.

BASEBALL

Sycamore 18, LaSalle-Peru 4: At Sycamore, Griffin Hallahan went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs, Owen Piazza was 3 for 3 with an RBI, and the Spartans won the Interstate 8 game in four innings.

Sycamore’s 16-hit attack also included 2-for-3 efforts by Hunter Britz (two doubles, RBI) and Jacob Reidl (RBI). Jimmy Amptmann had a double as well.

Morris 7, Kaneland 4: At Morris, the Knights fell in Interstate 8 action.

Jake Bianco pitched three scoreless innings in relief for Kaneland.

Rockford Christian 9, Genoa-Kingston 5: At Rockford, the Royal Lions broke open the nonconference game with five runs in the fifth inning to take the lead for good.

Rhett Kline led the GK offense with three hits and an RBI. Ben Younker had a hit and two RBIs.

GIRLS SOCCER

Indian Creek 9, Rochelle 2: At Shabbona, Emma Turner scored five goals for the Timberwolves in their season opener.

Emily Astling added a pair of goals for Indian Creek. Kylee Bauer and Audrey Witte also scored. Goalkeeper Molly Feitlich earned the win.
