Veteran’s Day is observed on Wednesday, November 11, 2020.

In the United States, Veteran’s Day is a federal holiday to honor all men and women serving in our military. Veteran’s Day was initially known as Armistice Day, first occurring on November 11, 1919 to recognize the end of World War I. In 1954, Armistice Day was officially changed to Veteran’s Day to recognize and honor the veterans of all U.S. wars.

Veterans are special members of American society.

Following their military service, a lot of veterans go on to careers such as teachers, firefighters, police officers, airline pilots, doctors, and scientists. They translate their sense of service and duty to new roles beyond the military uniform they wore. As such, they deserve to be recognized and honored on this special day.

Norberg Memorial Home, Inc. & Monuments proudly partners with the LaSalle County Veteran’s Assistance Commission to honor all veteran’s and express our gratitude.

“We must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them,” says Janice Smallwood, co-owner of Norberg Memorial Home. “In honor of Veteran’s Day, we reached out to our local veteran’s office in LaSalle County to get some valuable information to pass on to our veterans and their families.”

The mission of the LaSalle County Veteran’s Commission is to advocate for veterans and their families.

Operating from the downtown courthouse at 119 W. Madison St. in Ottawa, the LaSalle County VAC is certified through the National Association of County Veteran Service Officers (NACVSO) to represent veterans and their affairs. Their purpose is to help veterans and their families apply for any benefits they may be eligible for. These can include education, pension, compensation, funeral and burial, headstones and markers, presidential certificates, healthcare, and appeals.

In addition to the main office in Ottawa, the LaSalle County Veteran’s Assistance Commission has outreach locations at the Streator City Hall on Tuesdays, IVCC on Wednesdays, the Mendota Chamber of Commerce on Thursdays, the LaSalle Outpatient Clinic on the third and fourth Wednesday of each month, and the Sandwich VFW on the first Friday of each month.
